This workshop explores the great Spanish artist Joaquin Sorolla and his unique and dynamic approach to painting. Students look at and practice Sorolla’s special manner of paint handling and color approach. Using bold modern colors, students learn the different characteristics of his highly chromatic palette. This workshop includes the study of the portrait and figure, both costumed and nude.Internationally recognized artist, workshop instructor and author, Robert Liberace will focus on exploring the dynamic power of Sorolla’s brush stroke.

John Singer Sargent's unerring eye and bold, fluid application distinguishes him as on of the greatest artists to ever handle a brush. This five day class is inspired by the extraordinary portrait technique of Sargent and explores many aspects of his approach from the color of his palette to his enthusiasm for the great baroque artists, Valasquez and Hals. In addition to focusing on the great master Sargent. We will also look at the structure, features and anatomical form of the face. This class will explore both the organized and elegant manner of classical drawing, and the dynamic, fresh approach of alla prima painting. Though each style has a distinctive character, together they provide the artist with a more complete understanding of artistic technique. The first day will focus on drawing methods with an emphasis on form and anatomy. The final two days will concentrate on the spirited technique of alla prima, which will center on color and paint dynamics. Demonstrations will be given each day that will illustrate each approach. ROB'S CLASSES ARE HELD AT THE MADISON ANNEX AT 305 MADISON STREET, ALEXANDRIA
If you are interested in taking classes or local workshops from Rob through The Art League in Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia. Or if you have specific questions about classes or workshops, please contact the school directly at 703.683.2323 or go to www.theartleague.org.
(Rob is not involved in the sign-up process and does not know if a class or workshop is filled until the first day of class.) Workshops are not always listed in the catalog, so be sure to ask what is currently scheduled. They fill up quickly, so don't delay in signing up.
In the past, students signing up for Rob's Friday classes have been camping out to be sure to get a spot in the class. Now Rob's classes have been opened up to two classrooms each (with assistants) to allow a few more students to enroll. It seems to be working out well, so enrollment should be easier. Contact The Art League for details.

Fall, Winter and Spring
Morning Class: The Figure and Portrait; a Modern Approach to Classical Drawing, Fridays 10am - 3pm, Fall 2016, Winter 2017 and Spring 2017 session, nine classes each session, tuition $380. Please contact The Art League for more info.

This class explores beautiful master drawing techniques and the artists that used them. Using both authentic and contemporary materials, students study artists from Michelangelo to Ingres in order to develop a deeper understanding of the richness and power of their methods and materials. The fall and spring classes focus on red chalk, pencil, and silverpoint, while the winter class focuses on charcoal, pastel, and watercolor. Model fees are extra. Students need to purchase supplies for this class. A list of recommended supplies is available in the School Store located in room 217 of the Torpedo Factory.
Evening Class: The Classical Portrait and Figure (Painting), Fridays 3:30pm - 7:30pm, Fall 2016, Winter 2017 and Spring 2017,
Fall: Does not meet October 7 and make-up will be December 9.
Winter: No class on January 20 or February 10, make-ups will be March 17 & 24.
Spring: No class on April 14 & 21, make-ups will be June 16 & 23.
Nine classes each session, tuition $310. Please contact the Art League for info. This class focuses on the two most important traditions in classical painting--Disegno and Colore. The first half of the term looks at the sculptural Tuscan approach of Disegno, which involves a developed grisaille and subsequent layers of glazed paint. The second half of the term features the painterly Venetian practice of Colore which relies on direct application of paint. Students need to acquire supplies for this class. A list of recommended supplies is available in the School Store located in room 217 of the Torpedo Factory (The Art League) Art Center.

Transportation from King Street Metro - If you are taking the metro to Alexandria, it might be a bit of a walk from the King Street station to The Art League, but the free King Street Trolley, running every 10 minutes is an option. Here is information as of October 2016. Keep in mind it goes from the Metro station to the Torpedo Factory (The Art League's main building) which still six blocks south of the Madison Annex where Rob normally teaches. More info on getting around Alexandria here.
